Ambien is the brand name for the sedative-hypnotic drug Zolpidem, primarily prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It belongs to the nonbenzodiazepine "Z-drug" class and works by enhancing the effects of GABA, a calming neurotransmitter in the brain, to promote sleep. Available as immediate-release tablets, extended-release tablets (Ambien CR), sublingual tablets, and oral spray, it is intended for use only when a full night's sleep is possible.
