Manual lathes still have a place in prototyping and repair work, while CNC-equipped machines suit repeatable production runs where operator-to-operator variation needs to be minimized. Distributors sourcing for resale often stock both types, since customer needs vary widely by shop size and application.

Tailstock configuration, chuck compatibility, and available tooling options round out the checklist. A metalworking lathe that pairs well with a shop's existing tooling inventory reduces onboarding friction, which is often an underrated factor in how quickly a new machine actually starts contributing to output.
