National Heroes and Heritage Month – Garifuna Cultural and Culinary Festival
National Heroes and Heritage Month celebrate the recognition of persons who have made a significant contribution to St Vincent & the Grenadines and acknowledges traditional and historical elements that contribute to Vincentians way of life. Every year on National Heroes Day, the rural community of Fancy comes alive with the Garifuna Cultural and Culinary Festival.
The Garifuna, an Afro-Amerindian group, is one of SVG’s indigenous peoples, with a dynamic heritage that reflects their ethnic diversity, which is richly demonstrated in their food. With various offerings of Cassava bread, Cassava cereal, Madungo, Dakunna, Toumalay sauce, this festival is a palatable way to experience the Garifuna culture.
